"Bringing New Hope to Monroe County's Homeless Animals"
Monroe County's Only Animal Shelter
Ever wonder how some animals find their way to the AWSOM shelter? Ever wonder what it's like to be an animal staying at the shelter? See for yourself what makes AWSOM awesome!

Here are just a few more of our AWSOM success stories...

"After 2 months at the shelter it was hard to keep my spirits up, but my AWSOM friends told me the perfect home was waiting. They were right! Now I have a family who loves me and a big sister named Sasha who lets me play with her toys. Talk about a new leash on life!"
 - Blaze, adopted May 2010

"When me and my 6 brothers and sisters were left outside the shelter in a cardboard box, we never imagined a place as magical as the AWSOM cat house. While there, we spent our days climbing, chasing, jumping and playing as we grew. Since then I found my forever home and the last of my siblings is close to adoption. Dreams really do come true!"
 - Misty, adopted April 2010

"Being blind isn't easy, but my AWSOM friends made sure I never felt lost or alone. Now I have a comfortable home where I'm understood and loved. I'm thinking of changing my name to Lucky. Thank you AWSOM!"
 - Buddy, adopted February 2010

We welcome you to visit our shelter and spend time with our AWSOM animals. Each and every animal is given medical care, bathed, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, exercised and socialized on a daily basis. With adoption as the ultimate goal, we evaluate each animal to find the best family to meet their individual needs. Since November 2009, over 400 animals have found their forever homes through an AWSOM adoption!

Not ready to adopt? You can still make a difference in an animal's life, today! Volunteers are needed on a daily basis, so stop by the shelter and...
...Join the kitties of the AWSOM cat house for a pouncing, purring, hair-raising good time!
...Go for a stroll, sniff the air and roll in the grass with an AWSOM dog!

Meet
Bel (left, formerly Baby) and Arcadia (right, formerly Boomer)

Bel (formerly Baby) had been at the shelter for a very long time when new owners Kevin and Donna decided to give her a chance in their home. To say her transition into the home went easily would be a grossly inaccurate statement! Although very good in the house and with all people she met, there were clearly some serious issues regarding the canine members of her new pack. Kevin and Donna were extremely dedicated to incorporating this dog into their family. Thankfully, they were already accomplished dog owners, with both of their other dogs having earned their Canine Good Citizen awards previously. They understand the importance of structure in the household, as well as the importance of exercise and training. With tons of patience and persistence, Bel has begun a wonderful transformation. She is a pleasure to meet, is very well mannered, and has also earned her Canine Good Citizen award! What an attribute to dedication and hard work!

Arcadia (formerly Boomer) was adopted in the spring. Knowing little about her past, new owners Carrie and Vin contacted me for some guidance with basic training. Both owners were committed to having a good dog who would be a pleasure to take anywhere, and be just as wonderful at home. She had a few issues, but with consistent handling, learned to deal with her new life in a positive manner. I am so proud to tell you that she earned her Canine Good Citizen award at the completion of our six week course!!! This is the perfect example of what dedication and a little bit of training can do for these shelter dogs. Arcadia has become a wonderful family pet, and Carrie and Vin have demonstrated how beneficial it is to be a responsible pet owner!

The stories of Bel and Arcadia were submitted by an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. For more information on CGC training, or how to contact an evaluator, please call the AWSOM shelter @ 570-421-3647

Meet Matilda

Before                                                                    After
Matilda came to AWSOM in August 2010. She was left outside the shelter in the middle of the night, stuffed into a cat crate. As you can see from her "before" picture, this little girl was badly neglected with matted fur and nails so long they were curling under.  After her day of beauty, she is a totally different little dog! Thankfully, her sweet, fun, loving personality hasn't changed one bit! Matilda found her new home in August 2010 where she is now spoiled with love and attention!

Meet Elissa (now Harley)
Elissa came to AWSOM extremely sick and with a badly deformed front right leg. With love, patience and compassion, we were able to treat her health issues and ensure her comfort, while waiting for her to find her forever home. Elissa didn't have to wait long! Elissa found her new home in July 2010. She is now in a very loving home and is being well taken care of.  Unfortunately, Elissa's leg will have to be amputated because it was broken at an early age and was never treated. She quickly settled into her new home and feels like she has been there her whole life!
This is a truly AWSOM success story for Elissa and her new family!

Meet Oscar

                                                       Before                                          After

Oscar was found abandoned outside, in below-freezing temperatures. We didn't even know what kind of dog he was under all that matted fur. Oscar found his forever home in Feb. 2010!

Meet Sooner

Before                                              After
As you can see, Sooner came to AWSOM in dire need of help.  He was extremely and painfully matted. His nails were so long, they curled around themselves twice. After removing all the matted hair, the veterinarian found a leaking, benign tumor on the top of Sooner's head, which was surgically removed. Sooner found his forever home in Jan. 2010!
